David Shaw and Goose cover Blind Melon's "No Rain"

An ember needs fuel
Or it’s just a lonely flame
Fuel can be anything
Fuel can be anything
Born to a bricklayer
A child of the rain
Fuel can be anything
Fuel can be anything
They say the devil was born
In New Orleans
Right there in a room by the river
he sleeps
Fuel can be anything
Fuel can be anything.

I feel a certain kind of kinship to Shannon and Blind Melon’s music. Like him, I grew up in a small midwest city playing in metal bands and listening to the Grateful Dead among other influences from my older siblings. To be clear, I’m in no way comparing myself to him…He’s one of a kind…There is no other, but I do feel a thread between us. If you’re from the Midwest you know what I mean. We have a way, an easy kind of being. Hell, we could make friends with the devil and sometimes we do. I didn’t know Shannon but I can only imagine he had this in him. I’m just grateful for his true artistry, freedom of spirit, and willingness to go out on that edge where most won’t go just to bring back something beautiful for the people.

It was an honor to sing this song with Goose and pay tribute to one of the greats.

In closing, I’ll leave you with this.
“I know we can't all stay here forever. So I'm gonna write my words on the face of today and then they'll paint it”.
RIP Shannon.
